The Mill House by Valentino Architects is a residential conversion and heritage adaptation project of 2022 in Malta, Attard. While use before did serve as a disconnected cluster of Grade I and II listed 16th-century structures including a historic mill room, the transformation of 2022 provided a unified family home linked by a contemporary glazed walkway wrapped around an outdoor courtyard, increasing the usable surface area from disparate, isolated historic volumes to a cohesive, multi-level living and dining complex.
This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by demonstrating how highly restricted, top-tier heritage monuments can be sensitively modernized without altering the public urban fabric. By inserting a lightweight, reflective glazed walkway that is entirely invisible from the street, the design acts as a passive climate and light regulator—shading the stone facades during the peak of day while mirroring the surrounding environment—thereby proving that dense historical masonry can be woven into high-quality contemporary housing through targeted, low-impact architectural interventions.
