Rural modern house is a rural residential adaptive reuse and reconstruction project of 2021 in Romania, Argeș, Nucșoara, Slatina. While the traditional vernacular structure served as a shepherd's house and livestock shelter before a devastating fire turned it into a ruin, the transformation of 2021 provided a contemporary structural recycling that rebuilt the stone cellar base and raised a modern timber frame on the exact historical layout, increasing the usable surface area from a damaged historical footprint to 80 m².

This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by upcycling an irreparably damaged rural home into a contemporary residence through the local transmission of traditional building crafts. The design dismantled and reassembled the old stone cellar, repurposed original timber into a property fence, and utilized sustainably sourced regional Douglas fir wood to minimize material transport distances. By heavily insulating the structural shell with wool-based basaltic rock wool, the home matches traditional mountain vernacular forms with high thermal efficiency.
