House Rot-Ellen-Berg by architecten de vylder vinck taillieu is a renovated housing project of 2011 in Belgium, East Flanders. While use before did serve as an old inn, the transformation of 2011 provided a well-insulated living space inserted into the original brick enclosure, increasing the usable surface area from the footprint of the dilapidated inn to a multi-layered interior utilizing a Meccano-like structural system. This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by championing the "economy of means," proving that high-quality habitation can be achieved through the adaptive reuse of existing ruins rather than demolition. By integrating low-cost, industrial materials like scaffolding and wooden formworks within the historic shell, it reduces the carbon footprint associated with new construction while preserving the cultural identity of the Flemish landscape.
