The Punavuori Stable

avarrus Architects

Ajurien talli by Avarrus arkkitehdit is a residential transformation project of 2022 in Finland, Helsinki. While use before did serve as a century-old horse stable and later as miscellaneous storage, the transformation of 2022 provided 18 unique apartments and a restored two-story central lobby, increasing the usable surface area from a decaying industrial ruin to 2,000 m² of high-value urban housing.

This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by rescuing a historically significant building from decay through extreme adaptive reuse, converting a non-heated stable into high-performance housing. By collaborating with the City Museum to restore original elements—such as the horse ramps, timber railings, and five-sided windows—the design preserves cultural identity while utilizing the "circular" value of existing brick and concrete structures to minimize new material consumption.
