Adaptive reuse

Alexandra Afrasinei

Adaptive Reuse by Alexandra Afrăsinei is an agricultural heritage adaptation of 2021 in Cetate, Romania. It transformed a ruined 19th-century blacksmith workshop within the Barbu Drugă grain estate into a private capela, restoring the damaged brick walls and adding a distinct new concrete roof profile.

The project prevents total structural collapse by reusing remaining brickwork and converting salvaged solid wood beams into furniture. By introducing a modern concrete shell that mirrors the original volume but detaches via a metal shadow gap, the design clearly separates historical and contemporary layers while using a strategic south-facing cross window to frame the Danube landscape, adaptively densifying an artistic-cultural estate without new raw-material ground excavation.
