Traditional House in Kaimakli

Yiorgos Hadjichristou

Kaimakli House by Yiorgos Hadjichristou is a single house project of 2007 in Cyprus, Nicosia. While use before did consist of the remaining part of a traditional house in a neglected border village, the transformation of 2007 provided a fluid series of annexes with movable partitions and integrated vegetation, increasing the usable surface area from the original fragmented ruins to a unified, reconfigurable layout of internal and external spaces.

This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by reviving the architectural heritage of a sensitive border zone through a "Lego-like" system of high flexibility and passive climate control. By utilizing movable partitions and living vegetation as shading panels, it minimizes the need for mechanical cooling and allows the home to adapt physically to the inhabitants' needs and the Mediterranean climate.
