Cultural Space by ABRUPT ARHITECTURA is a rural heritage adaptive reuse project of 2021 in Romania, Archita. While the traditional Saxon barn served as an agricultural shelter for livestock and tools before this, the transformation of 2021 provided a vibrant civic engagement laboratory, a kitchen in the former animal chamber, and an eastern timber-clad annex, increasing the usable surface area from an abandoned agricultural footprint to 153 m².
This project contributes to the social-ecological transformation by rescuing a valuable piece of rural heritage from being dismantled for the second-hand wood market, transforming it into a vital community hub. It minimizes environmental impact by preserving the original stone, brick, and timber structure, utilizing only compatible, low-carbon natural materials—such as oak wood, brick floors, and lime-clay mortar—for its modern architectural additions.
